THE RED LION HOTEL
![THE RED LION HOTEL]()
Built around 1465, the Red Lion Hotel is set in an historic Tudor building, located in the center of the Roman city of Colchester in East Anglia. Rooms have dark wood furniture, exposed beams and traditional wattle and daub walls; some have four-poster beds and leaded windows. All feature dial-up Internet connections, fresh fruit baskets and complimentary toiletries. A range of modern European cuisine is offered in the hotel restaurant, which boasts a striking Tudor beamed ceiling and warm red and gold furnishings. By contrast, the coffee shop offers light meals in a bright, modern atmosphere. Colchester is England's oldest recorded town and a former Roman capital. The villages and countryside surrounding Colchester are typically English in style, with pink-painted cottages and tiny country lanes. London can be reached in one hour by train and Stansted airport is 35 miles away, about a 45 minute drive.
